The Clarity Journal
A writing practice for when something no longer fits — and you can't yet name what.
You built something. You achieved something. Or you've been running hard enough, long enough, that the next logical question is: running toward what, exactly?
This isn't a crisis of competence. It's a crisis of direction — and it often arrives precisely when things look most successful from the outside. The promotion happened. The company scaled. The metrics are fine. And yet.
This journal won't resolve that for you. But it will help you stop running past the question.
Use it over multiple sessions — not as a one-time exercise but as a space to return to until something becomes visible.
What's Actually True Right Now
Before any analysis of what to do — a factual inventory of where you actually are. Write without editing. Don't rush to meaning. Just describe.
- 1What does a typical week look like right now — the actual texture of it, not the version you'd describe to someone asking how things are going?
- 2What are you doing well? Be specific — not "leading well," but what exactly.
- 3What feels hollow, flat, or forced — even when it's technically working?
- 4What do you keep not saying out loud?
What You Expected This to Feel Like
Most people have an implicit image of what "having made it" or "getting there" was supposed to feel like. When reality doesn't match the image, disorientation follows — even when things are objectively good.
- 1What did you imagine this stage would feel like when you were working toward it?
- 2What's missing from that image that you expected to be here by now?
- 3If you're honest — is the discomfort about what's wrong, or about what you're realizing you want instead?
Who You Were vs. Who You Are Now
Identity shifts are slow and rarely self-announced. You wake up one day with capabilities, a position, and a life that your old operating system wasn't designed for — and the old system keeps running anyway. Work through each level — write each as it actually is, not as it should be.
- 1Environment — What does your current context look like — people, spaces, responsibilities? Is this the environment your old identity was built for, or something different?
- 2Behavior — What do you actually do? What patterns repeat? Which ones still make sense — and which ones have you kept running by inertia?
- 3Capability — What can you do now that you couldn't before? What did you build that's genuinely yours?
- 4Values — What do you care about at this point in your life — not what you should care about, but what actually drives decisions when you're not overthinking them?
- 5Identity — How do you currently describe who you are? Is that description still accurate — or is it a lag indicator, still reflecting who you were two or three chapters ago?
What You're Protecting
Staying in motion — staying busy, staying in roles that no longer fit, staying in ambiguity — usually protects something. Not rhetorical questions. Write the actual answers.
- 1What would become unavoidable if you slowed down enough to look clearly at this?
- 2What would you have to admit, change, or grieve if you got clear?
- 3What would you lose — practically, socially, in terms of how you see yourself — if you followed what's becoming clear?
What Clarity Requires
Clarity isn't a feeling. It's a decision about what to stop pretending — and what to name. Write your answer to each. Then read back everything you've written in this journal. Something will have become visible.
- 1What is already clear that you've been treating as still uncertain?
- 2What's one thing you know that you haven't said out loud yet — to yourself, or to someone who needs to hear it?
- 3What would the next chapter look like if it were actually designed for who you are now, not who you were?
- 4What's the first thing that would need to change for that chapter to begin?
Reflection
- 1What shifted between Session 1 and Session 5 — not in your situation, but in your understanding of it?
- 2What are you clearer about now?
- 3What question is still alive — and worth staying with?
Existential discomfort at this level is almost never a sign something is wrong. It's usually a sign something is ready to be named.
