The Pattern Finder
Name what keeps returning — and find the rule generating it.
Every persistent pattern has a structure underneath it.
Not a character flaw. Not a weakness. A rule — a belief or assumption about how the world works that was formed in a real context, that made sense there, and that has kept running long after the original context changed.
Behavior change that doesn't touch this underlying rule is temporary. The pattern resets because the rule is still producing it.
Preparation
You need one specific pattern to work with. Not a vague tendency — a concrete, observable, recurring behavior. Examples at the right level:
- · "I agree to timelines I already know I can't meet"
- · "I know a conversation needs to happen and I keep not having it"
- · "I take on other people's problems as my own responsibility"
- · "I push through when everything in me is saying stop"
- · "I undermine my own work in how I present it"
Choose one pattern that keeps returning despite genuine effort to change it. Write it down in one sentence.
The History
• How long has this pattern been present in your professional life? • In what situations does it show up most reliably? (Specific contexts: certain types of people, certain levels of pressure, certain types of stakes?) • In what situations does it not show up — where does it disappear or weaken?
The Attempts
Write down every significant thing you've tried to change this pattern. Include decisions, resolutions, skills you've developed, conversations you've had with yourself about it. For each attempt: what happened? Did it change anything? If it worked temporarily — what conditions did it work in, and what caused it to reset?
What It Protects
This is the most important step. Every persistent pattern protects something. It exists because, in some context — often an earlier one — it was the rational, even necessary response to a real situation. Ask: If this pattern disappeared completely — what would be at risk? Not what you think should be at risk. What actually feels at risk. Some patterns protect against rejection ("if I push back, the relationship breaks"). Some protect against failure ("if I don't do everything myself, it will fall apart"). Some protect against exposure ("if I'm seen to not know, I'll lose credibility"). Some protect against loss of control ("if I stop managing, chaos will follow"). Write whatever comes up — without judging whether it's rational.
The Cost
Now flip it: what does this pattern cost you right now? Be specific. Not "it limits me" — what specifically do you not have, do, or become because this pattern keeps running?
The Rule
This is the core of the exercise. Finish this sentence — write the first answer that comes, not the most polished one: "What I would have to believe about myself, about other people, or about how the world works for this pattern to make complete sense is: ___" Write it. Don't argue with it. Don't evaluate whether it's rational. Don't defend it or dismiss it. Just look at it. That's the rule. That's what's been generating the output you've been trying to change.
The Update Question
The rule was formed in a real context. It made sense there. • When was this rule formed, or in what situation did it first become useful? • Is that context still the context I'm operating in? • What would I need to believe instead for a different response to make sense? You don't have to answer the last question fully right now. The goal isn't to argue yourself into a new belief. It's to see that the current belief is a belief — not an immutable fact about how things are.
Reflection
- 1What do you know now about this pattern that you didn't have words for before?
- 2What has this pattern cost you over the time it's been running?
- 3What would it change — specifically — if this pattern were less automatic?
You can't change what you can't see. And once you can see it clearly, the pattern has less power — because you're no longer running it unconsciously.
